"So what's going on with education in different parts of the country? What should I be paying attention to?"
Those are two questions that the IDEA staff often hears from people in our network. They know that we rack up loads of frequent flyer miles traveling to conferences, school tours, and other gatherings focused on reinventing education. That means we have an ear to the ground in a lot of different places.
Executive Director Scott Nine wins the top traveler trophy so far. Over the past several months, IDEA has taken him to Atlanta; Jackson, Miss.; Boston; New York City; Providence, RI; Seattle; Washington, D.C.; and Puerto Rico, just to name a few. He's met with government officials, community organizers, major funders, and administrators; he's also talked in depth with parents, teachers, and students.
Scott has been looking for a way to share widely what he's been learning and what's been on his mind lately. He and I decided to keep it simple: have a conversation and record it. "The Landscape" podcast is the result. We envision rotating the folks who are part of the conversation, so you can hear from our organizers, bloggers, board, and other people who have something important to share with you.
If you like what you hear, we'll keep "The Landscape" going. Let us know what you think!

I think that hearing voices and seeing faces is a great move to make in the area of online outreach. I think that the podcast is very comprehensive of IDEAs mission and progress, more so than written efforts which tend to take longer to sift through and connect the dots on. It was a bit long, but being the first podcast, it makes sense for it to be that way. I know that when I am trying to understand a group of website, I can stay in for 10 to 15 minutes, and then supplement what I learned with something in text. The ability to do that decreases with the tendency to “multi"task while using the internet. I look forward to hearing more conversations, and maybe participating in some, in the future.
Melia Dicker, a writer and educator who has worked with students of all ages, is the Communications Director of IDEA. She has a degree in Psychology from Santa Clara University and is an alumna and board member of AmeriCorps' Public Allies. Melia co-founded Spark, a nonprofit organization empowering youth through leadership development and apprenticeships in their dream jobs.
