New York Performance Standards Consortium

Location: New York

The New York Performance Standards Consortium represents 28 schools across New York State. Formed in 1997, the Consortium opposes high stakes tests arguing that "one size does not fit all."

The Consortium is a coalition of high schools across New York State which have pioneered the creation of educational communities synonymous with active student learning, exemplary professional development and innovative curriculum and teaching strategies for 21st century students. Many of our schools and leaders have been nationally recognized through such honors as New American High Schools, 21st Century Schools, Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence, and Compact for Learning Schools.

Components
The Consortium regards performance assessment as a whole-school based accountability system. To support performance assessment, schools need to implement seven components ranging from establishing a culture of active learning to providing multiple ways for students to express and exhibit learning. In this section you can download information about the components.

Rubrics
Rubrics provide the basis on which to review the quality of student work across four performance tasks: the analytic essay, research paper, science experiment and applied mathematics. Download rubric samples here.
