Science Leadership Academy

The Science Leadership Academy is a partnership high school between the School District of Philadelphia and The Franklin Institute. SLA is an inquiry-driven, public high school focused on 21st century learning that opened its doors on September 7, 2006, and focuses on science, technology, mathematics and entrepreneurship. Students at SLA learn in a project-based environment where the core values of inquiry, research, collaboration, presentation and reflection are emphasized in all classes.

Highlights:

  • Advisory groups for all students
  • Individualized Learning Plans: giving students the opportunity to develop and answer questions about their career goals, gain real experience working with adult mentors in the working world and expand the classroom.
  • Internships at local businesses
  • 1:1 laptop school
  • Partnership with the Franklin Institute: all students get a membership to the Franklin Institute (a museum and center for science and technology near SLA), and students engage in mini-courses, internships, and many other projects at the Institute.
  • Class structure includes longer class-time for in-depth work and field trips, and performance-based learning and assessment.
